Structures pass from the abdominal wall to the external genitalia through this canal. In men, the spermatic cord passes to the testis through the inguinal canal. In women, the ligament that supports the uterus is present in the inguinal canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Inguinal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/tag\/hernia-surgery\/\">hernia <\/a>is a condition that occurs when abdominal tissues, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot of the inguinal canal. Inguinal hernia can occur in both men and women. The hernia will be formed lateral to the blood vessels when the inguinal canal is not fully developed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct inguinal hernia: Direct inguinal hernia is found in adults in the middle from the blood vessels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incarcenated hernia: When the abdominal get stuck in the groin, then the hernia is known as incarcerated hernia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strangulated hernia: Strangulated hernia is more severe and stops the blood flow to the small intestine and has to be treated immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading page-header\">Symptoms of inguinal hernia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Inguinal hernia symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"text-justify wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bulge :<\/strong>&nbsp;A bulge in the groin area on either side of the pubic bone. This happens if the hernia becomes trapped in the abdominal wall. This can lead to bowel obstruction that leads to severe pain, inability to have bowel movement, nausea, vomiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading page-header\">Strangulated Hernia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Strangulated hernia occurs when the incarcerated hernia becomes strangulated and blood flow to the tissue that is trapped is cut. Unless treated, a strangulated hernia can be life threatening and is a surgical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of an incarcerated or strangulated hernia include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nausea and vomiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden Pain and tenderness that quickly intensifies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bulge that turns red, purple or dark<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inability to move the bowels or pass gas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading page-header\">Causes of inguinal hernia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the factors that lead to inguinal hernia are discussed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased pressure within the abdomen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak tissues and muscles in the abdominal wall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Straining during <a aria-label=\"bowel movements\u2028 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/bowelmovement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bowel movements<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strenuous activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic coughing or sneezing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading page-header\">Treatment for inguinal hernia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/laparoscopic-hernia-surgery\/\">Laparoscopic hernia surgery<\/a> can be performed that is minimally invasive with less pain and discomfort. The surgeon initiates the surgery by administering a dose of general anesthetic to relax the muscles and to put the patient in sleep like state. The surgeon makes a small incision in the abdomen and is inflated with air to get a clear view of the internal abdominal cavity. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/tag\/laparoscopic-surgery\/\">laparoscope <\/a>(a thin long tube with a camera attached to its end) is inserted through the incision that allows the surgeon to view enlarged images of the organs and abdominal cavity that is connected through the monitor. After inspection, more incisions are made and other surgical repairing tools are inserted through the incisions into the abdominal cavity. A mesh is positioned in the weak spot of the inguinal canal to reinforce the abdominal wall. This mesh acts as a barrier and prevents further thrusting of the abdominal tissues into the inguinal canal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Totally extraperitoneal (TEP) \u2013 TEP technique involves refurbishing the hernia without inward bounding of the peritoneal cavity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading page-header\">Other Types of Hernias<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other types of Hernias include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiatal hernia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ventral Hernia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obturator Hernia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Femoral Hernia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Umbilical hernia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incisional hernia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"row row-cols-1 row-cols-md-2 g-4 bg-lightblue mt-2 mb-3\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n        <div class=\"card h-100 shadow cardhover\">\n            <div class=\"card-body\">\n                <h3 class=\"card-title text-start\">Hiatal Hernia<\/h3>\n                <p class=\"card-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/hiatal-hernia\/\">Hiatus hernia<\/a>\n                    develops when the upper part of the stomach bulges\n                    through an opening in the diaphragm. The stomach pushes through the opening in the diaphragm and\n                    bulges into the chest.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"col\">\n        <div class=\"card h-100 shadow cardhover\">\n            <div class=\"card-body\">\n                <h3 class=\"card-title text-start\">Ventral Hernia<\/h3>\n                <p class=\"card-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/ventral-hernia\/\">Ventral Hernia<\/a> can\n                    occur in any location of the abdominal wall as a bulge of\n                    abdominal tissues through a weak opening in the abdominal wall muscles. When the intestinal tissue\n                    gets caught up in the bulge and cannot be pushed back it is called Stangulaged Ventral Hernia.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"col\">\n        <div class=\"card h-100 shadow cardhover\">\n            <div class=\"card-body\">\n                <h3 class=\"card-title text-start\">Obturator Hernia<\/h3>\n                <p class=\"card-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drrpadmakumar.com\/blog\/obturator-hernia\/\">Obturator Hernia<\/a>\n                    is a very rare type of hernia that occurs through an opening in\n                    the pelvis.
